Sony Ericsson K800i upcoming version

The Sony Ericsson K800i is one of the mainstays of camera centric K series mobile phones from Sony Ericsson. Though there are other camera phones in the market today sporting even higher resolution cameras than the Sony Ericsson K800i, the handset's uncompromising imaging aids and tools together with an exhaustive feature list have made sure that the Sony Ericsson K800i remains at the top or thereabout.

The handset's 3.2 megapixel camera module was the first to break the 3 megapixel mark. To keep the reputation of the brand Cyber Shot, the Sony Ericsson K800i is loaded with all popular features from Cyber Shot digital cameras apart from 'usual' camera phone features like digital zoom and autofocus. Endowed with a full fledged Xenon automatic flash with red eye reduction instead of cheaper LED variant, the Sony Ericsson K800i is a true 'all light imaging' device.

Embedded 3G technology of the Sony Ericsson K800i enables it to perform high data transfer oriented video calls across UMTS networks. Triband GSM mobile network support ensures seamless voice connectivity in more than hundred countries across five continents. In absence of 3G networks, one can fall back to 'traditional' GPRS enabled data connectivity and surf and find relevant informations in the web. Local connectivity tools includes Bluetooth, Infrared and USB for quick transfer of file and synchronization of information.
Use the Sony Ericsson K800i's 64 Mb internal memory to carry all your stuffs, including some of your favourite tracks to be played while you're on the road. After all, the on board media player with so many advanced functions is at par with the best music phones available today, and it would be a shame to let it remain idle for long.

LG Optimus with Android Gingerbread headed to MetroPCS

MetroPCS is getting ready to launch a new LG Optimus Android smartphone, after the Optimus M, launched at the end of 2010, and based on the popular Optimus One. Reportedly called LG Optimus M+, the new handset isn’t a high-end device. But that was expected, since the original Optimus M isn’t, either.

The Optimus M+ borrows some design elements from LG’s new L-Style smartphones, showcased in Barcelona at MWC 2012 last month . It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and features a 3.5 inch HVGA display, Bluetooth 3.0, 5MP rear camera with Flash, and an 800MHz processor.

There’s no word on exactly when MetroPCS will start selling the LG Optimus M+. The handset should be offered for a low price anyway (anything over $200 off-contract wouldn’t make sense). The Optimus M+ could become MetroPCS’ second LG device in 2012 – after the relatively high-end LG Connect 4G, introduced earlier this month.

Apple event: Coverage of the iPad 3 annoucement

It’s March 7th, which means Apple’s next event, which kicks off at 1pm EST, is just minutes away. If the rumors are correct today we’ll meet the iPad 3, iPad HD, Apple TV, iOS 6, and/or any number of other products from Apple. Regardless of what actually happens it’s a big day for anyone interested in tablets, mobile computing, Apple, and technology at large.

We’ll be updating this page throughout Apple’s event, so check back early and often. Some of the sources we’ll be following include PCMag, Technologizer, GDGT, The Verge, and Ars.
And Apple’s online store is down for maintenance, so we know something is on the way.

It’s 1pm and the event is underway. Tim Cook is on stage. He is running through the preliminaries… Post-PC devices made up 76% of Apple’s Q4 2011 revenue and the Post-PC devices/era play to Apple’s core strengths. The company now has 362 retail locations, including news ones in Amsterdam and NYC’s Grand Central Station. There are over 100M people on iCloud and 25B apps have been downloaded.
Today, Siri is moving to Japan. It’s actually part of iOS 5.1, which is available today and rolling out over Japan over the course of the next few weeks.

And first up for the big announcements… there is a new Apple TV. It’s 1080p and has an iOS-like interface according to Apple’s  Eddy Cue. It will be able to access iCloud, watch movies, watch TV and so on. It’ll be $99 and available March 16th. So yes, iCloud supports movies.
And it’s iPad time… The iPad has been a huge, huge success — Apple shipped 15.4M units in Q4 2011. It’s great at playing games and has over 200K dedicated apps.

Phil Schiller is on… and what’s that? A new iPad. It has a retina display, as expected, and still uses a 9.7-inch display. The resolution is 2048 x 1536, 4x that of the iPad 2, just as predicted. That makes for 264 ppi and a very nice image quality.

They are still calling it “the new iPad”. Phil – we need a name.
Before that though: the new iPad will have an A5X SoC. The X part? That means it has quad-core graphics… and 4x the performance apparently.
The camera has been updated as well. It’s now 5MP with backside illumination and a 5 element lens. It has autofocus, auto white balance, and face detection too. It’ll record video at 1080p — perfect for the retina display.
And, here’s the big one: 4G LTE. This connectivity will make for up to 72Mbps, well over the iPad 2's 42Mbps. Sample videos show that 4G LTE (as we already knew) is much faster and has much lower latency than 3G. It’ll land on AT&T and Verizon in the US. There will be two different LTE models, both of which will be 3G compatible. The new iPad has the most radio bands of any mobile device apparently. On 4G the battery life is 9 hours, normal battery life is 10 hours (just like before).

The new iPad will start at $499, will be 9.4mm thick, and 1.5 pounds. Prices will be at $ 499, $599, and $699 for 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. If you want 4G they will be $629, $729, and $829.

Pre-orders start today! (The store is still down though, so keep reading.)
Hey, uh, Phil, what’s this thing called?
[It's demo time, so you'll have to watch the video of the event later on to see what's happening right now. The presenters include Namco, Autodesk, and Epic Games.]
According to Schiller, the new iPad “has more memory and higher screen resolution than an Xbox 360 or PS3.”

Nexus S CDMA to get ICS - for real this time

The folks over at Engadget confirm that an ICS update for the CDMA Nexus S and Nexus S 4G should be live within a couple of weeks.

If you own a CDMA version of the Nexus from Samsung, then you probably are all too familiar with the agonizing pain of knowing that there's a phone out there that's virtually identical to yours, except that it's running an updated OS.

We're referring, of course, to the GSM/UMTS version!
If you haven't gone the backdoor route of rooting your device and uploading the other version, then you've been out of luck this whole time. Hopefully, that should change within the coming weeks.

HTC One X to hit UK on April 5, O2 confirms

Fortunately those delay rumors turned out to be completely unfounded and the HTC One X is keeping nicely to its market availability schedule. O2 UK just confirmed though its Twitter account that it will be getting the next HTC flagship on April 5, which is mere three weeks away now.

We already knew the carrier was getting the smartphone, but now that we have a specific release date, it may be a good time to start saving. O2 refused to disclose the pricing of the smartphone, saying that it's too early for anything to be settled just yet, but some retailers have already spilled the beans on it.
The HTC One X will be available for free on a ?36/month two-year contract or for ?119.99 on the cheapest available, ?26/month deal. An HTC MediaLink HD USB to HDMI adapter will be gifted to everyone, who pre-orders the smartphone.

Sadly, Pay as you go deals details aren't available just yet and we are suspecting those might not be available in the first weeks of the One X availability. We'll hope to find out more about that in the following days, so stay tuned.

Nokia Windows 8 Tablet Rumored for Q4

There’s no doubt that Nokia is eventually going to release a Windows 8 tablet. The latest rumor pins it for a Q4 2012 release. DigiTimes reports a 10-inch tablet with a dual-core processor. The Verge says the processor will most likely be the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, which we previewed during CES.

You can also view brianmfb’s mockup in full resolution right here.
Nokia is expected to outsource production of the 10-inch Windows 8 tablet to Compal Electronics. The first batch of shipments is estimated at 200,000 units.

It’s way too early to get excited for this tablet if it’s expected late in the year. With the new iPad releasing in just a few days, maybe it isn’t such a bad idea for Nokia to wait.

Thoughts on the Nokia 808 PureView

I’ve always been a fan of Nokia’s cameraphones because it meant carrying one device instead of a point-and-shoot camera AND a phone. In regards to imaging, my favorites were the Nokia N93, N82, N86 8MP, and the N8. Nokia recently announced the 808 PureView which is going to be Nokia’s best imaging phone yet. I’ve played with the device at Mobile World Congress and was impressed especially with the technology behind it. There’s just one problem. It’s not a Windows Phone device.

Nokia already made me fall in love with Windows Phone and it’s going to be really hard for anyone to convince me to use Symbian again. That’s my big problem. I want the 808 PureView’s camera, but not Symbian.

When asked why their new imaging flagship is running Symbian instead of Windows Phone, Nokia’s usual response to the press was that they’ve been working on the technology for five years. They’ve just recently adopted Windows Phone. Nokia insisted we’ll eventually see a ‘combination’ of PureView technologies on Windows Phone.

The keyword ‘combination’ came up multiple times when I asked about Windows Phone and PureView. I suspect it means we’ll see a Nokia Windows Phone device with high performance optics and Nokia industry-leading image processing algorithms, BUT with a smaller sensor than the 41 megapixels found on the Nokia 808 PureView.

Sony Ericsson K850i - Impressive images. Innovative connectivity options

The Sony Ericsson k850i is a camera phone par excellence. As a matter of fact, the handset is in no way less than a standalone digital camera. It is evident that a lot of innovation and research has gone into the design and development of the sophisticated imaging options of the Sony Ericsson k850i. The fact that the Sony Ericsson k850i is one of the best camera phones currently available in the market should not cause any raised eyebrows.

Some people might find the small size of the handset a constraint as high end camera lens cannot be fitted in the same. However, this is more than made up with the incorporation of the Xenon and LED flash. These two features of the Sony Ericsson k850i camera phone ensure that the picture quality is in no way compromised.

One can use the Sony Ericsson k850i to get great images even in suboptimal conditions. The shutter lag of the integrated camera is 0.25 seconds. However, the best part about the camera options of the Sony Ericsson K850i is "ease of use." One need not be very tech-savvy to use and operate the mega-pixel camera options present in the Sony Ericsson k850i.

FM radio options and capabilities to download video clips ensure that there is never a dull moment with the K850i mobile phone from Sony Ericsson. The music related features are equally amazing. One could, for instance, know more about particular songs using the Track ID software of the handset. Quite innovative, isn't it?

Samsung Galaxy Note ICS update pushed back to Q2

We are afraid we have some bad news for the Galaxy Note users out there. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the phoneblet has been pushed back from its initially announced Q1 launch to Q2.
It's only been confirmed by Samsung Norway through its Facebook account, so it's not certain if the delay will be a global thing, but that seems likely. The global rollout of the Ice Cream Sandwich update only took a few days, so we assume the Galaxy Note units, which are much fewer in number will be updated in a very short interval.

The reason for the delay is unknown just yet and so is the exact launch date. With Q2 starting in a couple of weeks and ending in June the delay might be a pretty minor thing or it could mean another three months without the latest and greatest from the Google OS for the Note users. Here's hoping it will be a case of the former rather than the latter!

Samsung Galaxy S II ICS review: Sugar coated

The Samsung Galaxy S II has sold in record numbers worldwide and millions of users must've cheered the news of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update rolling out. The latest OS from Google is a new lease of life for the Galaxy S II - but desserts are served at the end of the meal. It's an opportunity for the S II to finish with a flourish as it makes room for the much-anticipated new flagship.

Ice Cream Sandwich, or ICS for short, improves the performance of the phone in some areas and promises better battery life - so, it's kind of like you're getting a free hardware upgrade.
There's also a lot of new functionality that garnishes Ice Cream Sandwich, a lot of which is concentrated in the browser, but the general usability of the interface got a boost too with the latest from Google.
Here's a summary of what you can expect after updating your Samsung Galaxy S II to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Improved user interface Faster web browser with added features
.Slightly better graphics performance.Slightly better battery life Stereo sound in videos. SNS integration into phone book.Better UI for switching apps and killing them Face unlock Built-in data usage monitor.

Of course, the Galaxy S II interface is not purely Google-made - the phone runs the latest TouchWiz 4.0, but often times you can't quite tell it's a new version of the software at all. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing.
Anyway, we'll test the camera to see if Samsung have made any tweaks to the processing or upped the video bitrate or done anything to improve image quality.

Get your taste buds ready and jump over to the next page where we try to find what Ice Cream Sandwich means for the general interface and functionality of the Samsung Galaxy S II.

With 3G completely out of the question and cameras never crossing the 2MP mark, there's a tight limit on how much extra luggage dual-SIM phones can carry. The X2-02 gets around it by focusing on a single skill and really going the distance with it.

Phones like the Nokia X2-02 are at the bottom of the food chain. Most of the time, a flashlight is all the extra functionality one can hope for. A 2MP fixed focus camera and blurry choppy videos are the closest to luxury you can get at this price. Dual-SIM telephony is the main course, but in the X2-02 the side dish may be just as tasty.

The Nokia X2-02 inherits the dedicated music controls (and the vibrant paintjobs) of the X1-01, but takes music playback to a whole new level. The built-in FM antenna lets you blast the tune playing on the radio through the powerful loudspeaker without having to plug the headphones first. The side-mounted microSD card slot is always ready to take a huge music collection, which the FM transmitter will broadcast to every radio around you.

There couldn't have been more for the X1-01 to hope for. But the upgrades don't end with the added features. Take the jump to our hardware chapter, where we discover a side-mounted, hot-swappable SIM slot and a better keypad.
